How to Install an Urdu Keyboard on Any Device

Every major operating system ships with Urdu keyboard support built in. You rarely need to download anything — you just need to know where the setting lives.

Here is the short version for every platform, plus an honest note on when installing is not worth the trouble.

Windows 11 and 10

Settings → Time & language → Language & region → Add a language → search Urdu → Next → Install.

Switch with Windows key + Space or Alt + Shift.

Choose the Phonetic layout unless you specifically need the official UZT standard layout — phonetic maps Urdu letters onto the English keys that sound like them, so there is almost nothing to learn.

macOS

1. System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → Edit…
2. Click +
3. Select Urdu and choose a layout
4. Click Add

Switch with Control + Space, or click the flag in the menu bar.

macOS offers both a standard Urdu layout and a QWERTY-based one. The QWERTY variant is closer to phonetic and easier if you already type in English.

Linux

The exact path depends on your desktop environment, but the pattern is consistent.

GNOME: Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → + → Urdu

KDE Plasma: System Settings → Input Devices → Keyboard → Layouts → Add → Urdu

Command line (any distro):

setxkbmap -layout us,pk -option grp:alt_shift_toggle

This adds the Pakistani layout alongside US English and sets Alt+Shift to toggle between them.

Android

Settings → System → Languages & input → On-screen keyboard → Gboard → Languages → Add keyboard → Urdu

Choose Urdu (transliteration) if you want to type Roman English and get Urdu — this is the fastest option on a phone and the one most people should pick.

iPhone and iPad

Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard… → Urdu

Note that iOS does not offer built-in Roman-to-Urdu transliteration. You get the standard Urdu layout only.

Chromebook

1. Settings → Advanced → Languages and inputs
2. Under Inputs, click Add input methods
3. Search for and select Urdu
4. Click Add

Switch with Ctrl + Shift + Space, or click the input indicator in the status area.

Getting Nastaliq fonts

Installing a keyboard gets you Urdu letters. Getting Urdu that looks right usually needs one more step, because most systems default to a Naskh-style font rather than Nastaliq.

Windows, macOS, Linux: download Noto Nastaliq Urdu from Google Fonts and install the .ttf file. On Windows, right-click → Install for all users. On macOS, double-click → Install Font. On Linux, copy to ~/.local/share/fonts/ and run fc-cache -fv.

Android and iOS: you generally cannot install system fonts without root or jailbreak. Apps and websites that bundle their own Nastaliq will still display correctly.

When you should not bother installing

Installation makes sense if you type Urdu regularly on a machine you control. It is the wrong choice when:

• You type Urdu occasionally. The setup cost outweighs the benefit.
• You are on a shared, work or public computer. You may not have permission, and you should not leave keyboards installed on machines that are not yours.
• You want Roman-to-Urdu conversion. No system keyboard on any platform offers transliteration except Android's Gboard. If you want to type mera naam and get میرا نام, a system keyboard will not do it.
• You do not want to learn a layout. Even the phonetic layouts require some adjustment.
• You need to write once and move on. Opening a browser tab is faster than a settings walkthrough.

For all of these, the online Urdu keyboard is the pragmatic answer. It runs in any browser on any device, needs no installation or permissions, includes Roman transliteration and voice typing, and works offline after the first visit.

Which to choose

Most people benefit from both: a system keyboard for quick native typing, and the web tool for transliteration, conversion and export.
