Urdu Keyboard for iPhone and iPad: Complete Setup Guide

iOS includes an Urdu keyboard as standard. Adding it takes under a minute, though iOS has one significant limitation compared to Android that is worth knowing about before you start.

Adding the Urdu keyboard

1. Open Settings.
2. Go to General → Keyboard → Keyboards.
3. Tap Add New Keyboard….
4. Scroll to and select Urdu.

The Urdu keyboard is now available in every app.

Switching to Urdu while typing

Tap the globe icon (🌐) at the bottom-left of the keyboard to cycle through your keyboards. Press and hold it to see the full list and jump directly to Urdu.

If you only have one other keyboard, a single tap toggles between them.

The layout

iOS provides the standard Urdu layout, arranged by Urdu alphabetical logic rather than by English key correspondence.

Useful things to know:

• Long-press letters to reach related characters — long-press ا for آ, or ہ for ھ and ۃ.
• Long-press the number key for Urdu numerals and additional punctuation.
• The Urdu comma ، and full stop ۔ are on the main layout, not hidden in a submenu.

The limitation: no built-in transliteration

This is the main difference from Android. iOS does not offer a Roman-to-Urdu transliteration keyboard. You cannot type mera naam and get میرا نام using Apple's own keyboard.

Your options:

Use the standard layout. Learn where the Urdu letters sit. Workable, but slower at first since the arrangement is not phonetic.

Install a third-party keyboard. Gboard is available on iOS and includes Urdu transliteration. Note that third-party keyboards on iOS require granting "Full Access" for most features, which lets the keyboard app see what you type — consider whether you are comfortable with that.

Use the web. The online Urdu keyboard works in Safari and offers transliteration without installing anything or granting keyboard permissions.

Dictation

iOS dictation supports Urdu on newer devices.

1. Tap the microphone on the keyboard.
2. Speak in Urdu.

Availability depends on your iOS version and region settings. If Urdu dictation is not offered, check Settings → General → Keyboard → Enable Dictation, and confirm Urdu is among your keyboard languages.

Apple's on-device speech models have historically had weaker Urdu coverage than Google's server-side recognition, so results may be less accurate than the equivalent on Android or in Chrome.

Fonts

iOS renders Urdu in a Naskh-style system font. Nastaliq is not available as a system font and cannot be installed system-wide.

Apps and websites that bundle their own Nastaliq font will display correctly. If Urdu looks flat and horizontal rather than flowing and diagonal, you are seeing the system Naskh face rather than a rendering error.

Common problems

Cannot find the globe key. It only appears once a second keyboard is added. Check Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards.

Urdu appears as boxes. Rare on modern iOS. Usually an app using a custom font without Urdu coverage.

Text runs left to right. Some apps handle right-to-left poorly. The text is stored correctly and will display properly in apps that support RTL.

Autocorrect interferes. Turn it off for Urdu under Settings → General → Keyboard → Auto-Correction if it is causing more trouble than it solves.

Third-party keyboard not appearing. After installing, you must add it under Keyboards and, for most features, enable Allow Full Access.

Writing longer Urdu on iPhone

For messages the system keyboard is fine. For anything longer — an email, an article, a document — a phone keyboard of any kind becomes the bottleneck.

The browser-based Urdu keyboard runs in Safari, gives you Roman transliteration without any installation, and lets you export directly to Word or PDF when you are done. On an iPad in particular, it is a far more comfortable writing surface than the on-screen keyboard alone.
