Urdu Keyboard for Android: Setup, Apps and Voice Typing

Android has genuinely good Urdu support built in, and Gboard's Urdu transliteration is among the best available on any platform. Most people do not need to install anything extra.

Enabling Urdu in Gboard

Gboard is the default keyboard on most Android phones.

1. Open Settings → System → Languages & input → On-screen keyboard → Gboard.
2. Tap Languages → Add keyboard.
3. Search for Urdu.
4. Choose your layout:
   • Urdu — the standard Urdu keyboard
   • Urdu (transliteration) — type Roman, get Urdu
5. Tap Done.

You can also reach this faster: open any keyboard, long-press the comma or globe key, and tap Language settings.

Switching languages while typing

Tap the globe icon (🌐) on the keyboard's bottom row to cycle between languages. If you do not see it, long-press the spacebar instead.

Transliteration is the best option on mobile

If you enable Urdu (transliteration), you type Roman English and Gboard converts as you go, offering Urdu suggestions above the keys. Tap the one you want.

This is considerably faster than the standard layout on a phone screen, where hunting for Urdu letters is slow. It is the setup most Urdu speakers on Android end up using.

Voice typing in Urdu

Android's Urdu speech recognition is strong.

1. Tap the microphone icon on the keyboard.
2. If it is listening in the wrong language, tap the language name shown during recording and choose Urdu.
3. Speak naturally.

To make Urdu available for voice: Settings → System → Languages & input → Voice input → Google voice typing → Languages → select Urdu.

For long messages, dictating and then correcting a few words is much faster than typing.

Alternative keyboard apps

Gboard covers most needs, but alternatives exist:

Microsoft SwiftKey — good Urdu prediction and a well-regarded transliteration mode. Worth trying if Gboard's suggestions do not suit you.

Dedicated Urdu keyboards — several exist on the Play Store with themed layouts and extra Nastaliq fonts. Check permissions carefully before installing any keyboard app: a keyboard sees everything you type, so stick to well-reviewed apps from established developers.

A keyboard app has access to every password, message and card number you enter. This is one category where it is worth being conservative about what you install.

Fonts on Android

Most Android phones render Urdu in a Naskh-style font rather than Nastaliq. It is readable, but not what Urdu readers expect.

Unlike Windows, you generally cannot install system fonts on Android without root access. Some manufacturers (Samsung, Xiaomi) offer font packs in their settings that may include Nastaliq options.

Apps that bundle their own fonts — including web pages that self-host Nastaliq — will display correctly regardless of your system font.

Common problems

Urdu shows as boxes or question marks. The app is using a font without Urdu glyphs. Most modern apps handle this correctly; if a specific app fails, it is that app's problem rather than your phone's.

Transliteration suggestions are wrong. Gboard learns from your usage and improves over time. You can also clear its learned data in Gboard settings if it has picked up bad habits.

Cannot find the globe key. Long-press the spacebar instead, or check that more than one language is actually enabled.

Voice typing does not offer Urdu. Ensure Urdu is added under voice input languages, and note that voice typing requires an internet connection.

Text direction is wrong in an app. Some apps handle right-to-left text poorly. This is an app bug, not a keyboard problem — the text itself is correct and will display properly elsewhere.

Typing Urdu on the web

If you are writing something longer — an email, a document, a post — typing on a phone is painful regardless of keyboard.

The online Urdu keyboard works in your phone's browser and gives you a larger editor, word and character counts, and direct export to Word or PDF. For anything beyond a message, it is a more comfortable place to write.
